  • ASSISTANCE TO THE FAMILIES OF INCARCERATED (AFI MINISTRY)
ASSISTANCE TO THE FAMILIES OF INCARCERATED
    (AFI MINISTRY)
    • This is the report of AFI Ministry (Assistance of Families of Incarcerated), from the Office of Life, Justice & Peace in our Archdiocese of LA. This is a direct ministry based on one-on-one visits with families around the five Pastoral Regions: Los Angeles, San Pedro, Santa Barbara, San Gabriel, and San Fernando.

All these families that have been visited are broken, and hurt, they feel anger, pain, sorrow, hate, guilt, resentment, shame, sadness, isolation, abandonment, rejection, etc. Every time I go to visit for the first time, I don’t know what I am going to find. I must be strong, focused, compassionate, act with empathy, solidarity and listen carefully to their stories and be sensitive to see their needs and find resources for them.

                        Dn. Paulino Juarez-Ramirez

  • For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.
    Matthew 25:34-40
    • Assistance to the Families of Incarcerated (AFI)

The ministry Assistance to the Families of the Incarcerated, (AFI) is a journey of conversion. Families carry shame, anger, and fear surrounding the situation they face, and they look to God’s mercy to help them carry their burden and find peace. We accompany families, inviting them to see the love of God and to regain the joy in their lives and in their families.

Archbishop José Gomez, sensitive to the needs of many families, gave the opportunity to create this ministry that started in January 2018. AFI is part of OneLife LA and has been serving families that have a loved one in custody, (Jail, State Prison, ICE Detention Center), offering resources from our Archdiocese, County Public Offices, Consulates and other institutions that offer their services according to their needs. AFI, assists families by providing immediate help, connecting them with the right resources. Through these works of mercy, we tell these families that they are not by themselves.

Our ministry is helping these families, in small ways, to recover the sense of their lives. We are present, even remotely, with these families, giving them an opportunity to feel God’s presence. Jesus tells us, inviting us to do his mission as his disciples, “May the light of our eyes be reflected in the gaze of the poor.”
